A statement of the jury of the German Short Film Award: „The outside is like a room I cannot enter.“ Gernot Wieland, who takes a look at his own childhood and notes that no matter how porous the separating membrane appears, how permeable the glass of the window pane makes the landscape behind it appear, it remains at a distance. No bridge leads from the inside to the outside. The topology of the invisible spaces into which we are born is at once unconscious and rigid. The compulsion to conformity, which is cast off like a shadow and decides on life plans, views and affiliations, is oppressive. “Bird in Italian is Uccello” is a meandering, poetic search for traces of sovereignty in the socio-psychological structures that define societies. „I look at the reflections of myself in the glass of the car window. If my language would exist, I would say: absence – this absence is what speaks to me.
